Dutch Zea premières new video Hauntology

In the maze and intricate world of music, we discover the new solo project Zea who emerging as a captivating force, pushes against conventions and classifications. Comprising of Arnold de Boer and collaborators Harald Austbø, Ineke Duivenvoorde and Xavier Charles, Zea creates an eclectic sonic palette that defies easy categorization.

The roots of Zea trace back to meetings and encounters amid various musical ventures, with Arnold’s collaborations laying the foundation for this unique union. Hailing from the Netherlands, the band members bring diverse musical backgrounds to the table, with Xavier adding a touch of French roots. Their associations with notable groups such as The Ex, Seesaw, Space Siren, and Dans Les Arbres contribute to the rich tapestry of Zea’s collective experience.

The project’s name, loosely translating to “mais” in Greek, adds a layer of mystery to their already multifaceted identity. Speculations about its potential connection to the feminine rendition of Zeus only deepen the intrigue surrounding Zea.

Arnold takes the lead in the songwriting process; this serves as a canvas for each member to contribute their influences. Embracing improvisation, Zea’s live performances breathe new life into their tracks, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving experience for their audience.

Their recent release, “We Are Still Each Other’s Only Hope” under
Makkum Records, is a statement to their musical narrative. The accompanying video from Director Alek Riquelme, shot at Ineke’s studio, captures the core of Zea’s artistry – a relaxed Sunday afternoon ambiance among friends and their communal ethos.

Zea’s music landscape draws from a variety of influences, blending free jazz, lo-fi, dub, and breakcore into their compositions. The result is a vibrant and multi-layered allure that captivates listeners, offering a unique journey through their sound.

Reflecting on their journey in 2023, Zea highlights an enthralling concert at OCCII, Amsterdam’s beloved DIY music haven, as a standout moment. The release show for their latest album marked a key experience, resonating within the welcoming embrace of a community-driven venue that feels like home.

As they set their sights on 2024, Zea prepares to embark on a series of shows, eager to share their music across different landscapes. Their musical journey continues, with the band aiming to explore new horizons while remaining united as a quartet.

According to Zea, Amsterdam’s music scene beats with life, a hub of vibrant improvisation circles and a thriving underground community centered around venues like OCCII, championing experimentation and non-conformity.

When asked about local bands, Zea recommends The Earwurms, HOWRAH, Brader Muziki and The Paper Ensemble, each contributing unique hues to Amsterdam’s scene. Parting with advice, Zea encourages embracing the DIY ethos and advocates for a more direct connection between artists and their audience, stepping away from platforms like Spotify to foster a more intimate musical experience.
