Dirty Fences
‘Sell the Truth b/w 2X2’
Dirty Water Records
May 2017
One of the best among the breed of new, hip punk bands, Brooklyn’s Dirty Fences have a gift of the riff and a catchy hook and are big on almost cheesy sing-alongs. But I’m a bit of a sucker for that kind of stuff.
The title song features all of the above and is a winner. Ramones meets Kiss, relentless backbeat and faux corny singing blend to deliver an instant fist pumper and a party starter. The official video for the song is a spirited mix of B movie trash, Clockwork Orange like brainwashing and tour footage goofery.
The B side 2×2 at 2 minutes and 46 seconds is an epic exercise compared to the almost a minute shorter A side. With its unusual breaks and behind the beat arrangement it’s also more musically ambitious but feels a bit showy and over-thought for exactly the same reasons. But for what it’s worth I applaud the effort. It even reminded me Suicide Commandos.
All in all I can’t wait to hear their next long player.
