Fine China Superbone: New Video premiere

Noise rock is always changing, and Fine China Superbone stands out with its raw, loud sound and unique style. Made up of Joeri, Manfred, and Wiebe, this Dutch band has created a special kind of music that’s both surprising and fun. In this feature, we find out about how they started, their music, and their plans for the future.

A Lucky Start In the small world of Dutch noise rock, it’s often chance that brings musicians together. “I don’t really remember,” Wiebe laughs. “There aren’t many people in Dutch noise rock.” Joeri explains: “I saw Superbone play a few times before I joined. We stayed in touch. When they needed a new bass player, they asked me. Manfred was the perfect choice because of his taste in music.” This mix of luck and shared interests led to the creation of Fine China Superbone.

Even though they live in different cities – Amsterdam, The Hague, and Amersfoort – the members of Fine China Superbone make great music together. “I live in The Hague,” Manfred says. Their different backgrounds add something special to their sound, mixing together different parts of Dutch culture.

Each member played in other bands. Joeri says, “Wiebe has been in every version of Fine China Superbone since 1997. That’s a lot of bands! I was in a noise rock band called Boutros Bubba, and I also play in Apneu, but that band isn’t doing much right now.” Manfred says, “I played in I Drive A UFO and Droppings. Now I’m in The Domains with Kevin Branstetter from Trumans Water. We made an album a few years ago and released it on vinyl. Kevin lives in Paris, so we work together when we can.”

The band’s name, Fine China Superbone, is strange and funny. “It’s named after my mom’s dishes,” Wiebe says. This is a funny contrast to their loud and aggressive sound.

How They Make Music The way they write songs is unusual. Wiebe says, “One person starts a song, and then we all give them a hard time. They get upset and cry. We burn their tears and breathe in the smoke. Then we play the song. It works sometimes.” Joeri has a different idea: “We lock ourselves in dark, wet rooms and take lots of drugs. We tie ourselves up and listen to kids laughing and then screaming. We don’t stop until we have a song.” Manfred says, “I try to make sense of the mess and add some beats.”

Their New Album: Hunk The band is releasing a new album called Hunk in September. “Hunk will come out on vinyl and cassette in September, with help from Vollmer Industries,” Wiebe says. Joeri adds, “We worked with Wayne Adams at his studio in London again. He understands our music and makes it even better. We made a video for the song ‘Henk’ with Alec Riquelme.” Recording in London has become important to the band, and Wayne Adams helps them make their music sound great.

Different Kinds of Music The band likes lots of different kinds of music. Wiebe says, “I like 70s jazz-rock, 80s hair metal, 90s noise rock, and newer kinds of music too.” Joeri says, “I only like Charli XCX.” Manfred says, “I like noise, jazz, and K-pop.” All these different kinds of music make their music unique and exciting.

What They’ve Done and What’s Next Wiebe says the best thing about last year was recording the new album in London with Wayne Adams. Joeri says, “The mental hospital was fun.” The band is planning a tour in France and Italy in the fall. They also have some shows in Belgium and the Netherlands. “We might die on tour,” Joeri jokes.

The Noise Rock Scene in the Netherlands – There aren’t many people who like noise rock in the Netherlands. “There are about 20 people who like this kind of music in the whole country,” Wiebe says. “People are nice, but not many people like our music.” The band practices in a space they helped build in The Hague with some other bands.

Even though there aren’t many noise rock bands in the Netherlands, Fine China Superbone likes some other bands. Joeri likes Katadreuffe, Life Savings, and Charli XCX. Manfred likes Polarized.
