MUTES Unveil New Single ‘Mere Slaughter’ and Tease Fourth Studio Album

Birmingham-based avant-garde outfit Mutes has set the stage ablaze with the announcement of their much-anticipated single ‘Mere Slaughter’, released via No Sound Records on November 17th, 2023. This fiery track offers a visceral taste of what’s to come from their forthcoming fourth studio album, expected in 2024.

Initially conceived as a solo ambient venture by the band’s vocalist and lyricist, James, Mutes erupted onto the scene in 2014 with their eponymous debut EP. Their sonic journey took a radical turn with ‘Starvation Age’ in 2015, a full-band release that embraced the raw edges of noise-rock and psychedelic influences. Their debut album, ‘No Desire’ (2017), hailed by DIY Magazine and The Line of Best Fit, marked a pivotal moment for the group under the independent label FOMA.

The band’s trajectory ascended with ‘Pareidolia’ (2019), their second studio album, championed by BBC Radio 6. ‘Dreams of Being Cornered’ (2021), their third album, showcased Mutes’ evolution, capturing the raw energy of their live performances alongside intricate synth textures and captivating vocal melodies.

‘Mere Slaughter’ the forthcoming single, a three-minute maelstrom of dissonant no-wave guitar, impassioned vocals, and a relentless rhythm section, provides an unfiltered reflection of a society tearing itself apart amid division and manipulation. Recorded live as a trio, the track embodies Mutes’ unbridled intensity and raw authenticity, capturing the essence of their live shows.

Discussing the inspiration behind ‘Mere Slaughter’ the band states, “It was born from a need to create something discordant—a sonic exorcism. A lament for a society devoured by division and gaslighting.”
