Sonic Rebellion: Eel Men Unleash London’s Underground Pulse

In London’s diverse music scene, a new band has emerged that doesn’t fit neatly into any genre: the Eel Men. The line-up includes Jimmy on vocals and guitar, Rory on lead guitar, Alec on bass and backing vocals, and Matt on drums. Occasionally, they bring in ‘Eely’ Dan, who adds versatility with his skills in backing vocals, guitar, percussion, keys, and whatever else tickles his fancy.

The story of Eel Men’s genesis unfolds like a captivating novel, weaving together tales from the US and the UK. Brothers Alec and Matt, originating from Atlanta, found their musical synergy in the US. Meanwhile, Rory and Jimmy’s paths converged in Harlow, Essex, as teenagers playing in bands at their local haunt, The Square. Dan, introduced through the London music scene, added his own unique flavor. Before Alec joined, the band members met through the London music scene, solidifying their connection around the summer of 2020.

“We all met through playing music in pubs and warehouses in north and east London. Jimmy asked the lot of us to form a band around the summer of 2020.”

Musical Journeys Unveiled

The musical journeys of Eel Men’s members are storied. Jimmy and Rory, having played in several London bands together, reminisce about their youthful days with The Ten-0-Sevens. “London hasn’t historically been known for its music but we are trying our best to change that” – they joked. Alec and Matt, shaping their skills in the US, add a layer of transatlantic rock to the mix. Yet, Eel Men is more than a sum of its parts — it’s a testament to the growth and evolution of each member. “Eel Men is our only band that really matters.”

Behind the enigmatic name lies a secret, one that the band guards closely. Initially considering ‘ILL Boys,’ the name ‘Eel Men’ prevailed, sparking wild imaginations and setting the tone for a band that revels in the unconventional.

The alchemy of Eel Men’s music is a shared endeavor. “Usually Jimmy or Rory comes up with a guitar part, or sometimes a whole song. They bring it to rehearsal and we mess around with it until it sticks. Jimmy spearheads the lyricism, while the composition is a collaborative effort. Each song is born from a guitar part or a complete piece brought to the rehearsal space by Jimmy or Rory, sparking a synergy that defines the band’s identity.

Their recent release, the Archetype b/w West Green Pirate single, is a testament to Eel Men’s commitment to authenticity. Recorded at Toe Rag in Hackney with Liam Watson, the tracks bear the imperfections of live recording— a deliberate choice that captures the raw, unfiltered essence of their music.

“You can hear that the songs ain’t perfect, which is how we think music should be.”

Eel Men’s music draws from diverse wells, with influences ranging from Ian Dury to Waylon Jennings, Total Control, the Stones, and Syd Barrett. Their rehearsals echo with discussions on these varied influences, reflecting a commitment to a sound that defies easy classification.

The year 2023 unfolded as a series of personal triumphs and musical revelries for Eel Men. From black belts in forklift driving to academic scholarships and unexpected divorces, the band members embraced life’s twists with humor and resilience.

“Rory got his blackbelt in forklift driving, Matt became a scholar, Jimmy can Tig weld upside down, Alec bought a leather suit and Dan finally got a divorce.”

With a European tour on the horizon and plans for their first LP underway, Eel Men’s journey is far from over. Their commitment to exploring new territories and captivating audiences around the world is evident in every note and beat.

“This month we are heading to Gizzard studios to start on our first LP. Lots of songs and a lot of new ideas will be on it.”
