Morrigan: Shaping Destiny through Music

In the vast and ever-evolving world of music, finding the perfect blend of talent, chemistry, and shared vision can be a rare gem. Enter Morrigan, a rising band hailing from the unlikely fusion of Ireland, Wales, and Cyprus. Comprised of Dara McHugh Murphy on guitar and bass, Jacob Kenning on drums and Marcus Dugan on vocals and guitar. Morrigan is poised to make their mark on the music scene with their unique sound and unwavering passion.

The story of how these talented musicians crossed paths is as serendipitous as it is fascinating. It all began when Dara and Jacob became housemates in September 2021, forging an instant bond that would lay the foundation for their musical journey. Introduced by mutual friends, their respective social circles merged, leading to the three of them spending more and more time together while organizing raves and parties. It was during this period that Marcus and Jacob began jamming together in the studio. When Dara returned from his exchange program in South Korea, he seamlessly joined their sessions, completing the trio.

Fate would intervene when Marcus was invited to perform as a solo artist at a festival but decided he wanted to explore the band’s dynamic instead. With the organizer’s blessing, Marcus reached out to Dara and Jacob, and the formation of Morrigan was set in motion. Their chemistry was undeniable, and they wasted no time writing music and preparing for their first show. However, the festival cancelled their set which only served as a minor setback in their journey.

Drawing inspiration from their diverse backgrounds and musical experiences, the members of Morrigan bring their individual flair to the table. Dara, who studied music in Ireland, had prior experience performing with a band, albeit playing covers. Jacob’s musical journey began with school bands and productions, but he had never ventured into original music until Morrigan. Marcus, on the other hand, has been immersed in the music scene for the past few years, exploring genres ranging from trap to ambient music. Under the artist name ‘Dugan,’ he has recently delved into slowcore/post-punk compositions.

When it comes to their name, Morrigan derives its roots from the Celtic goddess of death, war, and destiny. The moniker was conceived during a brainstorming session with friends, capturing the band’s attention due to its association with shape-shifting and the symbolic crow/raven imagery. Alternately known as the “Phantom Queen,” Morrigan perfectly embodies the essence and spirit of their music.

In the realm of songwriting, Morrigan fosters a collaborative atmosphere, with each member contributing their unique perspectives and musical ideas. Chord progressions often serve as a starting point, with Marcus and Dara frequently presenting their compositions during practice sessions. From there, the band builds upon these foundations, exploring different sounds and arrangements until the perfect harmonies emerge. The creative process is one of experimentation, where moments of spontaneity lead to captivating melodies and hooks.

Although the band has yet to release any music, their future plans are nothing short of ambitious. With the completion of drum recordings for their first singles, Morrigan is on the cusp of unleashing their captivating sound to the world. All that remains is finalising the guitar, bass, and vocals before the tracks are sent for mixing. Excitement runs high as they eagerly anticipate the moment their music reaches the public’s ears.

When asked about their musical influences, each member of Morrigan brings a diverse array of inspirations to the table. Dara draws inspiration from the compositional prowess of “The Strokes” while incorporating elements from “System of a Down” and “Deftones.” Jacob’s musical tastes span a wide spectrum, from drum and bass to the rock and metal genres. Artists like “Radiohead,” “Mgla,” and “Varials” resonate with his musical sensibilities. Marcus, on the other hand, embraces a multitude of artists and bands, ensuring his vocal and guitar stylings are diverse and distinct. From the rock band “She Wants Revenge” to darkwave artist “Mareux,” slowcore band “deathcrash,” and metal pioneers “Norma Jean,” Marcus finds inspiration in the rich tapestry of the musical world.

As Morrigan sets its sights on the future, plans for touring are gradually taking shape. While nothing is set in stone yet, the band eagerly awaits the opportunity to take their music to stages far and wide, connecting with audiences through their dynamic performances. In the immediate future, their focus remains on their upcoming gig at Groningen Upfest, a significant event that will showcase their talent and cement their presence in the local music scene. Additionally, the band is committed to releasing the tracks they recently recorded at Clay Studios, a momentous occasion that will mark their official debut.

Reflecting on the scene in Groningen, the band members acknowledge the city’s support for the local music community. However, being a relatively small city, they recognise the need to continually play shows and create music to expand their audience and attract new listeners. The anticipation surrounding the release of their recorded tracks heightens their excitement, as it signifies a pivotal moment when Morrigan’s music will finally reach the public, resonating with hearts and minds.

Morrigan’s journey has only just begun, but their dedication, talent, and shared musical vision paint a promising picture. With a fusion of diverse influences, the band’s sound promises to be an enticing blend of captivating melodies, intricate instrumentation, and thought-provoking lyrics. Keep an eye out for Morrigan as they take flight on their musical odyssey, defying expectations and shaping their own destiny.
